Day One: August 10, 2008

No surprise, since I decided to drive up in the morning by the time I had picked up my permit, had lunch and packed up the bear canister it was already late afternoon. So with only a few hours of sunlight remaining I set out from the Lake Sabrina trailhead.

There is a well-maintained trail all the way to Hungry Packer Lake so the going was easy, although it is a serious climb. A waxing full moon facilitated hiking for hours after sunset. I didn't need my headlamp until it started getting cold and my priorities shifted from following the trail to finding a place to camp.

I camped on an excellent ridge between the trail and the Middle Fork of Bishop Creek just above the confluence of the Topsy Turvy Lake drainage.

The above image of Picture Peak taken from my campsite the following morning shows just how delightful my stopping point actually was.
